Job Summary:

Major Duties:
Attorney-Advisors in the Market and Product Review Section of the Division of Market Oversight contribute directly to a range of activities that promote the fairness and integrity of futures markets, and promote an effective flexible regulatory environment responsive to evolving conditions. You will address and analyze a wide variety of issues related to derivatives markets, including the oversight and regulation of designated contract markets, derivatives execution facilities and exempt markets. Specific tasks may involve:
- Reviewing applications by entities for designation or registration by the CFTC as a regulated exchange, as and reviewing submissions by regulated exchanges and exempt markets to ensure compliance with applicable designation or registration criteria, core principles and CFTC rules, regulations and policies.
- Addressing legal and policy issues and problems related to futures trading and the CFTC's oversight programs for regulated exchanges and exempt markets by identifying issues and solving problems, and providing guidance to others both within and outside the CFTC.
- Drafting regulations, acceptable practices, no-action letters, policy statements, and interpretations of market related issues for adoption by the CFTC.
Qualifications:
All candidates must meet the minimum education requirements of successful completion of a full course of study in a school of law accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) and have the first professional law degree (LLB or JD) plus be a current member in good standing of the bar of a state, territory of the United States, District of Columbia, or Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
Superior Academic Achievement: May be substituted for one year of the required experience. Examples of Superior Academic Achievement include: top third or above of law school graduating class; significant achievement on law review; moot court participation; relevant law school coursework; undergraduate degree in economics or finance; law clerk experience with a major law firm, federal judge, U.S. Attorney's or Federal Public Defender's Office; superior legal writing ability as evidenced by current legal publications or the equivalent; honors graduate of college or university; and college debate team participation.
For grade CT-11, you must have a J.D. Degree, bar membership, and either Superior Academic Achievement or one year of legal practice experience, acquired after being admitted to the bar, commensurate with the duties and responsibilities of a legal position.
For grade CT-12, you must have two successful years of legal practice experience, acquired after being admitted to the bar, commensurate with the duties and responsibilities of a legal position.
For grade CT-13, you must have three successful years of legal practice experience, acquired after being admitted to the bar, commensurate with the duties and responsibilities of a legal position.
For grade CT-14, you must have four successful years of legal practical experience, acquired after being admitted to the bar, commensurate with the duties and responsibilities of a legal position.
Desired Qualifications:
- Skill in research and analysis of sophisticated legal issues, as well as excellent written and oral communications skills.
- Knowledge of commodities and/or related law and regulation, financial markets, economics, corporate law, general administrative law, government ethics, FOIA, Privacy Act requirements and/or antitrust law.
Compensation:
At the CFTC, we set our own pay scale that is competitive with other Federal financial regulators. Your compensation is based on your level of education and/or relevant work experience and varies by geographic location, as shown below. Starting salary is normally set at the minimum of the pay range for the grade filled.

12- $87,719 to $128,845
13- $104,312 to $153,221
14- $123,265 to $181,062
