Oil prices were lower overnight – at least crude oil and heating oil prices were lower, gasoline prices were up almost two cents overnight. The weakness did not last long and, by 11 AM, crude was up more than a dollar, heating oil was up more than three cents and gasoline had added a nickel. [More]

That lack of surprises had also been expected from a Fed Chairman thoroughly committed to sharing his thoughts on future policy with traders and others. Gasoline prices established new three-year highs on Tuesday and they brought heating oil prices along for the ride. Crude oil, though, did not make the trip with the products. It did not stray far from Monday’s close, finishing only 7 points lower. [More]

Gasoline prices advanced to their highest levels in almost three years on Monday, as the buying picked up where it had left off late last week. Traders are expecting fresh draws in this week’s DOE report, and they do not seem in any way fazed by poor demand or the likelihood of higher refinery utilization rates in the weeks immediately ahead of us. Oil prices dropped dramatically on Monday as traders reacted to a Standard & Poor’s report that downgraded the United States government’s ability to repay its debts. S&P did not reduce the US government’s triple "A" rating, but it said that, at 11% of GDP, the US account deficit was just too high. [More]

A key measure of consumer prices rose just 0.1% in March, and consumer sentiment was reportedly better while manufacturing in New York increased at its fastest rate in 12 months. The Federal Reserve’s Bank of New York economic index increased to 21.7 from 17.5 in March. [More]

A stronger US dollar helped push oil quotes lower in trading Wednesday night and into Thursday morning, and it looked like the bears might regain their ascendancy after a one-day lull in selling.
